The 10 yard container in Mooresville

The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 14 feet long it is the shortest container we run, so it suits tight spots — a short driveway, a townhouse apron, a back corner of a job site — and it fits comfortably in many driveways around Mooresville and Lake Norman. The trade-off is volume: it holds about three pickup loads, or roughly 50 to 70 trash bags, and cabinets and drywall fill it fast.

Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Concrete, brick, dirt, asphalt and gravel hit the limit long before a big box looks full, and the 10 includes about one to two tons. That is why heavy debris belongs in the small boxes: those materials should only go in a 10 or a 15, because of the weight limits on hauling them. Tell us what is going in and we will help you plan a load that stays inside the limit.

Small remodels, one-room cleanouts and the heavy stuff

A bathroom tear-out — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does a garage cleanout, a small kitchen job, a roofing tear-off on a smaller roof, a deck coming down, or a patch of concrete, tile or asphalt coming up. It works best for dense, heavy debris rather than bulky household junk.

It suits Mooresville because Town pickup stops short of project debris. Town Code Sec. 12-65(1) says building materials such as lumber, bricks, plaster, sheetrock, roofing shingles, carpet padding and linoleum will not be collected by town forces and shall not be placed at the curb. The Town's weekly bulky pickup does not take concrete, bricks, dirt, rocks or construction and demolition debris, and the Town's free Dial-A-Dumpster does not take construction debris, contractor debris or shingles. Anything more than a bag of scraps is what a 10 yard on the driveway is for.

The weight line on a 10 yard

About one to two tons — 2,000 to 4,000 pounds — is included, depending on the debris. Mixed household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it level with the top rim, and tell us it is coming. If the load goes over the included weight, the container is weighed after pickup and overage is charged on the excess tonnage — we explain the weight guidelines up front so there are no surprises. Rock and gravel get extra care on the road as well: on trucks licensed for more than 7,500 pounds, North Carolina wants those loads kept six inches below the top and securely covered (G.S. 20-116(g)(2)).

Suitability

Is the 10 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 10 yard for

  • Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
  • Garage or single-room cleanout
  • Roofing tear-off on a smaller roof
  • Concrete, brick, asphalt and tile within the weight limit
  • Tight driveways and limited placement space

Pick a different size for

  • A whole-house cleanout — that is a 20 or a 30
  • Bulky furniture from several rooms
  • Tires, car batteries, paint, oil, fuel or pressurized tanks
  • Fridges, freezers, A/C units and other large appliances — North Carolina bans them from landfills

Placing a 10 yard container on a Mooresville-area property

It needs a flat, stable spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, about 60 feet of access for the truck, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead — no low wires, branches or carports. On your own driveway or lot in Mooresville we found no Town permit rule for a roll-off, and the Town's own Dial-A-Dumpster must be placed in the driveway, not in the yard or street. The street is different: the Town Code bars obstructions in streets and sidewalks without Town approval (Secs. 20-71, 20-9) and makes storing personal property on a public street a nuisance (Sec. 23-107), and we found no Town dumpster permit. On NCDOT-maintained roads such as NC-115, NC-150, NC-152 and NC-801, G.S. 136-93 requires a written permit for any obstruction, and we found no permit path for a temporary roll-off. Other towns have their own rules — Kannapolis needs a Public Works permit to obstruct a street during building operations, and Davidson and Concord bar obstructions in their streets and sidewalks. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own code.

Answers

10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?

The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Allow about 60 feet of access for the truck, a flat, stable surface to set it on, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead — watch for power lines, tree branches and carports. Move cars, trailers and equipment out of the way, and if you will not be home, mark the spot with cones, chalk or tape so the driver places it where you asked.

Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?

Yes — it is one of the main reasons people rent one. Heavy materials such as concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt and gravel should only go in a 10 or 15 yard container because of the weight limits on hauling them. Spread it evenly, keep it level with the top rim, and tell us roughly how much there is.

How long do I get it for?

Most rentals include a standard rental period, typically 3 to 7 days. Need longer? Call and we can often extend it, depending on availability, for an additional daily or weekly fee. Finished early? Call and we will arrange an earlier pickup.

Is it the cheapest option?

It is our smallest container, and we quote every job on its own rather than publishing per-size prices. Rentals across the Mooresville area generally range from about $350 to $750 depending on the size, the type of debris, the weight, how long you keep it and where it is going, with flat-rate pricing that can include delivery, pickup and disposal — and no hidden fuel surcharges. If the job grows, we can often swap it for a bigger box quickly.
