The 20 yard container in Mooresville
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we often end up — it is one of our most requested sizes, and the all-purpose pick for a lot of Mooresville homes and smaller commercial jobs. It handles a whole-home cleanout, a kitchen or bathroom renovation, a roof, a landscaping project, a move or light demolition without being so tall that loading turns into a chore. It holds about six pickup loads, or roughly 110 to 130 trash bags.
It is about 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits in many residential driveways around Mooresville and the Lake Norman communities, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand.
Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, boxes and household junk from a whole house, drywall, flooring, cabinets and lumber from a multi-room remodel, a house cleared before a move — these are 20 yard jobs. Roofing projects use it a lot; tell us the roofing square footage and we help estimate the weight before delivery.
It is also a good box for light demolition and mixed construction debris — doors, framing, windows. Keep household garbage out of a construction load. North Carolina defines construction and demolition debris as solid waste resulting solely from construction, remodeling, repair or demolition operations on pavement, buildings or other structures (G.S. 130A-290(4)), and a C&D landfill will not take garbage, household trash, yard trash, appliances or liquids (15A NCAC 13B .0542(e)). If more than half of the load is dirt, concrete, brick, tile or asphalt, a 10 yard may be more efficient because of hauling weight limits.
What the 20 yard includes
Flat-rate pricing that can include delivery, pickup, the standard rental period and disposal up to the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — with no hidden fees. Roofing shingles, tile, plaster and wet landscaping debris are the loads that get heavy, so separate concrete, dirt or brick when you can, keep it below the top edge, and tell us when you book if you think you will go over.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home and moving cleanouts
- Multi-room renovations — drywall, flooring, cabinets, lumber
- Roofing projects
- Landscaping projects — branches, shrubs, yard debris
- Light demolition — doors, framing, windows
Pick a different size for
- Mostly dirt, concrete or brick (use a 10 or 15)
- Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus truck access
- Asbestos, paint, solvents, fuel, tires, car batteries or refrigerant appliances
Placing a 20 yard container on a Mooresville-area property
It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, about 60 feet of access for the truck, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead — no low wires, branches or carports. On your own driveway or lot in Mooresville we found no Town permit rule for a roll-off, and the Town's own Dial-A-Dumpster must be placed in the driveway, not in the yard or street. The street is different: the Town Code bars obstructions in streets and sidewalks without Town approval (Secs. 20-71, 20-9) and makes storing personal property on a public street a nuisance (Sec. 23-107), and we found no Town dumpster permit. On NCDOT-maintained roads such as NC-115, NC-150, NC-152 and NC-801, G.S. 136-93 requires a written permit for any obstruction, and we found no permit path for a temporary roll-off. Other towns have their own rules — Kannapolis needs a Public Works permit to obstruct a street during building operations, and Davidson and Concord bar obstructions in their streets and sidewalks. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own code.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six, or roughly 110 to 130 trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Mooresville driveway?
It fits in many — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs room to set it down. On your own driveway we found no Town of Mooresville permit rule for a roll-off. The street is different: Town Code Sec. 20-71 says no obstruction of any kind may be placed in the town's streets, sidewalks or alleyways, apart from building material placed with permission, Sec. 20-9 allows no encroachment on Town property or easements except as the town manager or a designee approves, and Sec. 23-107 makes storing personal property on a public street a nuisance the Town may remove. A Sec. 20-71 violation carries a $100 civil penalty (Sec. 20-80). Driveway first.
What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?
Most rentals include about three to four tons, depending on the debris type. Shingles, tile, plaster and wet landscaping debris are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.
How long is the rental?
Most rentals include a standard rental period, typically 3 to 7 days, and we can often extend it for an additional daily or weekly fee if the job runs on. If you finish early, call and we pick it up early.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Often. Same-day and next-day delivery are available in many areas depending on scheduling and availability, and the 20 yard is one of our most popular same-day sizes. Call before noon for the best chance. The yard is on South Broad Street inside Mooresville town limits, about a mile by road from central Mooresville, and route timing decides the rest — we tell you straight.
